TRINITY LUAU
The spirit of aloha was without bounds (He punawai kahe wale ke aloha) on Saturday, November 28, 2009 at the Feast of the Holy Sovereigns on the 147th Anniversary of Confirmation of Mo'i Kane Kamehameha IV and Mo'i Wahine Emalani. This Royal couple, out of deep faith in Christ and love for God, pledged to use their lives and positions in service to others and their people. Education, economic life, the criminal justice system, the water supply, and the well-being of Hawaii's people both physically and spiritually are all the better for their life and ministry. We in Hawaii give thanks for their witness and lay ministry, and we hope that the Episcopal Church nationally will ever do likewise on their day, November 28th. This Royal couple founded two of Hawaii's greatest schools: 'Iolani named for the King and St. Andrew's Priory; built the first of Hawaii's hospitals, now the Queens Medical Center; The King gave land for the Cathedral in Honolulu and the Queen saw to its construction, touring England to raise further funds; the King also translated the Book of Common Prayer into Hawaiian and helped the Anglican missionaries with their sermons in Hawaiian, and both won many to the Anglican way. We owe to them the introduction and first fostering of the Episcopal Church of Hawaii.

The day started off with a Craft Faire with hand-made crafts created by members of our church. We had many delicious sweets available at our bake sale and offered an ono plate lunch - Korean Short Ribs, chicken, rice and corn. After lunch, a silent auction with many donations solicited by Cora Camarillo began and continued through the luau. At 4PM a colorful service honoring our Ali'i was filled with Native Hawaiian Hymns, Oli, meles and a spiritually uplifting Hula. It was held within the ruins of the historic Kilolani Church built by David Malo, one of the first native-born Christian ministers and preeminent Native Hawaiian scholar and historian of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The inspirational Homily was given by Kahuna Pule John Hau'oli Tamoso of the Royal Order of Kamehameha 'Ekahi - Kahekili Chapter. After the service, a Hawaiian welcoming ceremony began the luau that was filled with music, dance, lots of food, great fellowship and a feeling of accomplishment. This fundraiser netted close to $3,000. It truly was a great way to end this Ho'aha'aina (Feast) befitting of such Royal subjects.

I would like to thank the following people for their support and hard work at our Ho'aha'aina: Father Austin and Maureen Murray; the entire vestry; my Komike especially Terri Pike; Soot & Judith Bredhoff; Rama & Cora Camarillo; Joan Vila; Rosemary Scott; Wendy McDonald; Dick and Barbara Zipf; Dick & Laurie Anderson; Tom & Deb Kelly; the Jacksons; to the Altar Guild; the many church members who found a way to help in their own way and the many Maui community members who assisted; The Maui High School Key Club (Thanks to Kyra Vila); St. Theresa Catholic Church; City & County of Maui, Department of Parks and Recreation; the vendors at Azeka Shopping Center and to anyone I may have missed - a big Mahalo Nui Loa!
